The crowd celebrated like they had just qualified for the Champions League and it ultimately meant that Eintracht Frankfurt held on for a win, a result that may just help them achieve this dream.

The main thing that will stick with us both about this match was without doubt the fanatical support. Egged on by a few individuals strategically placed at the front of the stand with megaphones, they just churned out chant after chant.

In fact, calling them chants is probably a disservice; these were full blown songs. It was a fantastic thing to be part of and the noise levels were incredible.

It is something we will always remember and we would highly recommend a visit. Despite a crowd of 48,, the exit from the stadium was a relatively simple affair.

We just retraced our steps back to the station and boarded a rather cramped train back to the city centre. In advance of the trip we had booked a table at a classic afpelwein tavern in the old town, but we got away from the stadium much quicker than we expected so had time for a couple of drinks before venturing there.

On the train we met up with 2 Germans who suggested that we join them in Gleis 25 for a beer before moving on. The pub was right beside the station so we went with our new German friends, Mini-Giroud he was that spitting image of a small Olivier Giroud, the Chelsea and France centre forward and his mate Kris, to the pub that they described as a crazy place.

They were not wrong — this place was nuts. It was packed, mainly with Eintacht Frankfurt fans, and the atmosphere was buzzing. Despite Gleis 25 being open hours, and the pull of hanging around for another Backstreet Boys tune, we made the decision to move on and find the afpelwein tavern.

MG and Kris were going to join us and we jumped in a taxi. It was then that we had the first proper hitch of the trip.

My phone had run out of battery and I could not remember the name of the tavern. A compromise was made and we got the taxi driver to drop us off in the old town also known as Sachsenhausen.

This area was lovely and it was packed with little restaurants and pubs. Despite the name, this was a just a typical pub and not a venue that would have been more ideally suited in the area around our hotel.

Without Google Maps on my phone I ventured onto the cobbled streets of Sachsenhausen to see if I could find this bar. After asking what seemed like half of Frankfurt, I eventually had a break when I found someone who pointed me in the right direction.

Heartened by this turn of events, I returned to the Hot Bar to gather up the troops. While I was out exploring, Little C and our new found German friends had managed to integrate themselves into a large group who turned out to be the staff from the Eintracht Frankfurt museum.

They were a great laugh but after my struggles to find the bloody place, I was insistent that we went to the shot bar, which coincidentally was called Shotz.

We asked the museum crowd to join us and they said they would follow on later so the intrepid foursome headed off into the Frankfurt night to enjoy a few shots.

As always, we took the positives out of this and as there was no queue at the bar we went big on the shots. We were presented with a long wooden box of colourful concoctions and then proceeded to play some strange form of Russian Roulette, but with shots.

Some were fantastic, others not so much and poor Kris even managed to pick up a shot with a little sausage in it.

After another 20 shots, we had our first casualty. We tried to cajole MG back into action but Kris decided it was best to get MG back towards the Central station — those poor sods had a late night train to catch to get home.

We wished the lads well and then went back for a few more drinks. The next problem we had was Little C — he went to the toilet but never returned.

It turned out that a member of staff had found him and suggested that it might be a good idea for him to go outside for while.

After finding Little C outside, we decided to head back to the Hot Bar with the museum crowd in tow. Once there we settled down at a table and the festivities continued, including some strange dice game that in all honesty I do not think we would have understood if we were stone cold sober, let alone after a few too many beers!

After explaining how we had missed our reservation at the apfelwein tavern earlier, our new friends insisted that we try it.

For a bit of history, Frankfurt is one of the main fruit growing areas of Germany and they have a large abundance of apples. It tastes like a sour, flat cider and does not really compare to the commercially produced ciders we would get in the UK, although I must admit that neither of us are cider connoisseurs so this is just our amateur opinion.

When we go back to Frankfurt, we might start drinking this a bit earlier in the day. The Red Light area was certainly a lot more, how can we say this…..
